The Coalition for a Democratic Syria (CDS) believes that Bashar Al-Assad's speech of January 6 only serves to emphasize his single-minded determination to preserve his position and power at all costs, and it evidences a disregard for the legitimate demands of the Syrian people for democratic governance.
His desperation to cling to power at the expense of the Syrian people persists after years of promised reforms and fictional peace plans, attacks on civilians, arrests of peaceful activists, and a refusal to engage with the leadership of the pro-democratic opposition that truly represents the will of the Syrian people, let alone with representatives of the international community.
"While Mr. Assad delivered his speech, Local Coordination Committees documented the deaths of more than 100 Syrians by regime forces," said Ayman Abdelnour, Chairman of Syrian Christians for Democracy, a CDS organization. "Mr. Assad continues to show that he does not care about true democratic reform, comprehensive peace, or the desires and interests of the Syrian people."
The Coalition for a Democratic Syria is a group of Syrian-American non-profit organizations working together to bring about a swift end to the conflict and support the establishment of peace, freedom, and democracy in Syria. The CDS is a multi-ethnic, multi-confessional, non-partisan organization. The CDS includes: Syrian Emergency Task Force, United for Free Syria, Syrian American Alliance, Syrian Expatriates Organization, Syrian Christians for Democracy, and Association of Free Syrians.
